I recently signed up for a free 14 day trial subscription to the anime streaming service HiDive. I had heard from other anime bloggers that there was some pretty good anime on this streaming service (like Call of the Night, Phantom of the Idol, and The Demon Girl Next Door) but I had never tried it out before. In previous years I’ve been pretty satisfied with all the anime that was available on CrunchRoll and Funimation. And saw no reason to bother branching out to other streaming services. Once Funimation was no longer a thing, I switched my secondary anime streaming service to RetroCrush. But there was one anime that I really wanted to see (I wanted to see that anime sooo bad! It looked so cute!) and it was only available legally on one streaming service (it’s like monopolizing anime series aka animopolizing!) and that one service was HiDive . . . and that’s what lured me in.
The anime that I just had to watch was Phantom of the Idol or Kami Kuzu Idol, and though signing up for the free trial with HiDive was a bit of a hassle, it was totally worth it. This anime was great! It’s super funny, the artwork is pretty good, and the characters are interesting. But enjoying a paranormal, idol, comedy anime was just the beginning of the treasure trove I found on HiDive!
Jumping into the HiDive Pool!
Though I thoroughly enjoyed bingeing the first few episodes of Kami Kuzu Idol, it didn’t take long for my eyes to start wandering to see what other anime were available for my little visit to HiDive. And what I found was truly surprising and delightful!
Here’s one little hiccup that might not make HiDive right for everyone, yet it makes it more appealing to me. There is a lot of shojo on HiDive! I won’t get into the big problem of global lack of gender equality here, but there is no denying that anime streaming services tend to lean heavily toward the shonen/seinen, guy oriented anime. I’m definitely not saying that any of this anime is bad, I like lots of shonen anime series! But for people like me that also like shojo and cute anime, it can be tough to find series to watch.
Not on HiDive! There are so many cute looking anime series, I had a hard time choosing which ones to try first. Seriously, I don’t think I’ll be able to watch all the anime I want in just 14 days! So here is the anime series I’m trying first.
Phantom of the Idol, Of course I had to watch this one! This is the series that tempted me into the HiDive pool in the first place. It’s about a completely disinterested male Idol, Niyodo, who only got into the idol business because he thought he could make money without actually putting any work in. It’s also about Asahi, an energetic female idol that died too young and is now a ghost that longs for her past idol life. When the two meet backstage at one of Niyodo’s concerts, they decide to work together so Asahi can relive her idol days and Niyodo can get out of working. It’s really funny!
Call of the Night, I’ve only watched a couple episodes of this one, so I’m still not completely sure if I actually like it yet. Call of the Night is about a 14 year old boy with insomnia that goes for a walk in the middle of the night, meets a vampire, and decides that he’s going to do everything he can to become a vampire. This anime does have a certain appeal to it. The artwork is kind of unique and it really does capture the otherworldly feel of an urban location at night. Cities really are completely different that late at night, and I love how this anime genuinely expresses that differentness.
Crois`ee in a foreign Labyrinth, this is a cute anime about an old French grandpa metal smith that comes back to France from a trip to Japan and brings with him a little girl in a kimono. The series seems to be a slice of life anime about the girl learning about her new home in Paris and the people that live in the neighborhood. The story seems very cute, and the animation quality looks very good too!
100 Sleeping Princes and the Kingdom of Dreams, The anime is about an average every day office worker that gets transported to a fantasy world where she’s told that she’s a long lost princess and she has the power to wake up princes trapped in rings. These princes are needed to defeat the shadow monsters that are destroying their world. The animation is really cute, and it almost has an otome game feel to it!
